Dear Bene Israel, and other Indian or non-Indian Jewish Community we have an urgent Matter.

We have been welcomed & helped in the great land of India approx. 2500 years back, and grown to big community from few couples who were washed to the shores of Navgaon in Alibag division. Our Ancestors were called ‘Shaniwar teli’, means Saturday oil pressers, and later called ‘Bene Israel’ Jews.

בני ישראל היקרים, ולקהילה יהודית הודית או לא הודית אחרת יש לנו עניין דחוף. התקבלנו בברכה ועזרו לנו בארץ הגדולה הודו בערך לפני 2500 שנה, וגדלה לקהילה גדולה מכמה זוגות שנשטפו לחופי נבגאון באזור אליבאג.

אבותינו נקראו 'שניוואר תלי', פירושו מכבשי שמן לשבת, ולימים יהודים בני ישראל.

This letter is public petition to be submitted in required institution; to bring attention to us from Honorable Courts, Governor, Government Offices, in India, ie. Collector office, Municipalities, Village registration offices, Maharashtra Mantralaya, and others related institutions. We want to create awareness of the Jewish (Bene Israel) community sentimental issues and request help for Preservation of cultural and historical heritage. We appreciate receiving a minority status, but it is not helping to preserve our cemeteries, in state of Maharashtra, India. The Jewish (Bene Israel) community need to be benefited from the constitutional rights and remove consequently hurdles upon our religious customs and cultural practices. We plead to provide assistance for protection for the cemeteries and accept our existence of religious needs and values.

מכתב זה הוא עתירה ציבורית שתוגש במוסד הנדרש; להביא לנו תשומת לב מבתי משפט נכבדים, מושל, משרדי ממשלה, בהודו, כלומר. משרד הנהלת המחוז, עיריות, משרדי רישום של כפר, המטה המנהלי של המדינת מהרשטרה ועוד מוסדות קשורות. אנו רוצים ליצור מודעות לסוגיות הסנטימנטליות של הקהילה היהודית (בני ישראל) ולבקש עזרה לשימור המורשת התרבותית וההיסטורית.

אנו מעריכים את קבלת מעמד המיעוט, אבל זה לא עוזר לשמר את בתי הקברות שלנו, במדינת מהראשטרה, הודו. הקהילה היהודית (בני ישראל) צריכה לקבל תועלת מהזכויות החוקתיות ולהסיר מכשולים על המנהגים הדתיים והמנהגים התרבותיים שלנו. אנו מבקשים להעניק סיוע להגנה על בתי העלמין ולקבל את קיומם של צרכים וערכים דתיים.

Gondhalpada (Alibag)/ גונדלפדה (אליבג)

Encroachment of Cemetery area by some family who came to stay inside the area of cemetery, they tie cattle to the grave head and then they are broken by the cattle and also man hand involved in to the destruction of graves. The cemetery is in horrible condition. Action Needed: Protection and Preservation of the Jewish Cemetery, remove the encroacher’s out of the cemetery.

פלישה לאזור בית הקברות על ידי משפחה כלשהי שבאה לגור בשטח בית הקברות, הם קושרים פרות למצבה ואז הם נשברים על ידם וגם יד אדם מעורבת בהרס קברים. בית הקברות במצב מחריד.

פעולה דרושה: הגנה ושימור בית העלמין היהודי, הסר את הפולשים מבית העלמין.

Chaul (north) Cemetery/ בית הקברות צאול (צפון)

Cause: The planed Coastal Road Project will affecting the Jewish (Bene Israel) cemetery, cause irreparable destruction to the Ancient Jewish Cemetery and graves, damage of tombstones, and the obliteration of historical and cultural symbols. The Petition is not against the development of infrastructure projects, but urges the authorities to consider alternative solutions. There are graves from year 1800’s too, clearly passed more than 100 years.

סיבה: פרויקט כביש החוף המיושר ישפיע על בית הקברות היהודי (בן ישראל), יגרום להרס בלתי הפיך לבית הקברות היהודי העתיק ולקברים, נזק למצבות ולמחיקת סמלים היסטוריים ותרבותיים. העתירה אינה נגד פיתוח פרויקטי תשתית, אך קורא לרשויות לשקול פתרונות חלופיים. ישנם גם קברים משנת 1800, ברור שעברו יותר מ-100 שנים.
