הצילו את הטבע בעמק המצלבה

אנו, תושבי ירושלים, אוהבי עמק המצלבה, מבקשים את עזרתכם!

בימים אלה עלו הדחפורים על המדרון היורד מרחביה אל עמק המצלבה. על-פי התוכנית של הקרן לירושלים ועיריית ירושלים ייבנו במרכז השביל העליון שבראש המדרון (ברח׳ סעדיה גאון) כמה מבנים: מערכת מדרגות רחבה עם רמפה בצידה, משטח מרוצף לעגלת קפה ושירותים, וקיר ענק להנצחת שמו של התורם. בנוסף יוצב במקום דגם של ירושלים. כמו כן, מתוכננת כריתת עצים, החלפת צמחייה בת 40 שנה בצמחייה חדשה, והפרדת השבילים מן החורש הטבעי על-ידי ריצוף אבן וגינון נוי. הרצון להפוך את העמק לגן על שם תורם עתיר הון, העביר את העירייה ואת הקרן לירושלים על דעתן. המצבה הענקית שהן מתכוונות להציב ברח' סעדיה גאון כדי לרומם את שמו של התורם תפגע ביפי הנוף הנשקף מרחביה לעבר עמק המצלבה. מבנה השירותים והקפה שמיועד לקום שם ימשוך אליו אוטובוסים של תיירים בדרכם לעיר העתיקה וייצור מפגע תחבורתי קשה בפנייה מסוכנת זו, שכבר היום מהווה סכנה לתחבורה. סלילת השבילים המתוכננת במורד אל העמק תגרום לעקירת צמחייה טבעית ייחודית, בניית מצפה מאבן מנוסרת תהפוך את המקום ל"פארק חתונות" שאינו מתאים למקום ולנוף, והחלפת הצמחייה הוותיקה בצמחייה חדשה תביא לפגיעה אקולוגית. עמק המצלבה הוא שמורת טבע ייחודית ונדירה שנשתמרה במרכז ירושלים. אנו תושבי העיר מבקשים לשמר אותה כפי שהיא ולא "לשפץ" אותה מכל העברים ולהפוך אותה לגן ציבורי. חשוב להדגיש שכבר היום המדרון מונגש לנכים משני כיוונים (מרח׳ מטודלה ומרחוב סעדיה גאון), כך שהרמפה המתוכננת כלל אינה נחוצה. עיריית ירושלים והקרן לירושלים, אל תפגעו בטבע ובנוף הטבעי. המשיכו לתחזק את הצמחייה הטבעית ואל תרצפו את השטח כפי שעשיתן כבר בעברו השני של העמק (ליד המנזר). עמק המצלבה הוא נכס ציבורי מיוחד שזקוק לטיפוח מינימלי. אל תעקרו עצים ושיחים! אל תרחיבו ואל תרצפו שבילים, אל תהפכו טראסות למשטחי אבן! התוכנית עברה בלי לשמוע התנגדויות של הציבור והדחפורים כבר עובדים בשטח. תושבי רחביה נסערים. המינהל הקהילתי "גינות העיר" כינס השבוע ערב של שיתוף הציבור בהשתתפות הקרן לירושלים והצעקה שקמה הביאה את הקרן להחלטה על "חשיבה מחדש" לגבי כוונותיה להקים בית קפה ושירותים בטיילת המתוכננת. ראש עיריית ירושלים, אל תשלח ידך אל העמק! זה הרגע האחרון לעצור את התכנית!

We, residents of Jerusalem and lovers of the Valley of the Cross, want your help! These days, bulldozers have started to work on the downhill slope leading from Rehavia to the Valley of the Cross. According to the program of the Jerusalem Foundation and the Jerusalem Municipality, several structures will be built in the center of the upper footpath at the top of the slope (on Saadya Gaon Street). These include a wide staircase and an adjacent ramp, a tarmac where a coffee kiosk and public toilets will be placed, a huge wall commemorating the donor, and a maquette of the city of Jerusalem. Trees will be chopped, 40-year-old vegetation will be replaced with new nursery plants, and the paths will be cut off from the natural forest and paved over with stones and non-indigenous greenery. The desire to turn the Valley into a park named after a wealthy donor has led the Jerusalem Municipality and the Jerusalem Foundation to take leave of their senses. The huge plaque they intend to position on Saadya Gaon Street to glorify the donor will tarnish the beautiful view from Rehavia across the Valley. The planned public toilets and coffee kiosk will attract buses of tourists on their way to the Old City and create a serious traffic hazard at a dangerous curve of the road, which is unsafe as it is. The descending footpaths into the Valley will uproot unique natural vegetation, the stone building will turn the place into a "bride-and-groom photo op" location, while the replacement of the unspoiled indigenous flora and fauna with man-made landscaping will create an ecological disaster. This is utterly unsuitable and stands in complete disparity with the place and the natural landscape. The Valley of the Cross is a singular and rare natural reserve in the center of Jerusalem. We, the inhabitants of the city, want to preserve it as it is, not to "renovate" it and turn it into a public promenade. It should be emphasized that even now, the slope is accessible to handicapped visitors at two points (Metudella Street and Saadya Gaon Street), so the planned ramp is not necessary at all. Jerusalem Municipality and the Jerusalem Foundation, DO NOT harm what's left of the natural landscape. Please CONTINUE to care for the natural vegetation and DO NOT pave over the area, as you have done on the other side of the Valley (near the Monastery). The Valley of the Cross is a very special public asset that requires minimal care. DO NOT uproot trees and shrubs! DO NOT expand or pave over natural paths, and DO NOT turn natural terraces into stone surfaces. The plan was approved without hearing out the public's reservations, objections, or grievances, and the bulldozers are already at work on the ground. The residents of Rehavia are outraged! Earlier this week, the Ginot Hair Community Center and the Jerusalem Foundation summoned a meeting with the local residents to discuss the project. The uproar and outcry heard there led the Foundation to "rethink" its intentions to set up a cafe and public toilets in the planned promenade. Dear Mr. Mayor of Jerusalem, lay not out thy hand on the Valley! This is the last-minute chance to halt the plan!
