אנו תושבי רעננה מאוחדים בדרישתנו מראש העיר חיים ברוידא להפסיק לאלתר ולצמיתות את ריסוס העשבים המסרטן על מדרכות עירנו!
1. על מה המהומה?
רעל עשבים מסרטן מרוסס בימים אלו באופן שיטתי ומאסיבי על פני כל מדרכות רעננה, כמדי שנה לקראת הקיץ.
רעל העשבים, המכונה "טייפון" (גרסה ישראלית של "ראונדאפ") מקושר לסרטן מסוג לימפומה שאינה הודג'קין, אשר התחלואה והתמותה ממנו בישראל הן מהגבוהות בעולם.
רעל זה הוכרז כמסרטן בסבירות גבוהה על ידי ארגון הבריאות העולמי.
2. האם זה חוקי?
הרעל מאושר לשימוש חקלאי ולחשיפה של אזרחים לשאריותיו במזון בלבד.
חוקיות החשיפה הישירה, הלא ממוגנת והמסרטנת לריסוסו על מדרכות העיר נופלת בתחום אפור ושנוי במחלוקת ללא פיקוח ממשלתי ראוי.
3. מדוע ריסוס המדרכות מסוכן?
הרעל מרוסס על גבי מדרכות העיר לאור יום, וצמוד להורים, ילדים, נשים הרות, תינוקות, כלבי מחמד וחתולי רחוב, השואפים אותו בעת ולאחר הריסוס לריאותיהם, נוגעים בו או בולעים אותו, וסופגים את נזקיו ההרסניים.
הרעל נשאר פעיל ורעיל על פני מדרכות העיר במשך שבועות לאחר מועד הריסוס, כיוון שאינו נספג או מתפרק על פני המדרכות כבתוך האדמה החקלאית לה מיועד.
4. מדוע העירייה מרססת מדרכות? ואיך לא שמעתי על כך עד עכשיו?
רעל העשבים מרוסס בעקבות תלונות של תושבים לגבי עשבים בינות לאבני המדרכות.
נכון לעכשיו לאגף חזות פני העיר אין פתרון חלופי שאינו הרסני לבריאותנו, פרט לגיזום תקופתי במגבלות התקציב אשר יותיר כמות עשבים מסוימת.
העירייה אינה מתריעה מראש לגבי זמני ומיקומי הריסוסים וסכנותיהם למשפחות תושביה.
לסיכום:
הצורך בעישוב המדרכות אינו מצדיק את סכנת חשיפתנו תושבי רעננה, משפחותינו וחיות המחמד שלנו לרעלים מסרטנים, ואנו דורשים שיופסק הריסוס בחומרים הרסניים אלו באופן מיידי ומוחלט!

We, the residents of Ra'anana, are unanimous in our demand from Mayor Chaim Broyde to stop spraying cancer-causing herbicides across all Ra'anana sidewalks immediately and indefinitely!
1. What's the fuss about?
A cancer-causing herbicide is currently being massively and systematically sprayed across all Ra'anana sidewalks, which is an annual procedure before the summer.
The herbicide is linked to a cancer called Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, whose morbidity and mortality in Israel are among the highest in the world.
The herbicide ("Typhoon", an Israeli version of "Roundup") has been declared highly likely to cause cancer by the World Health Organization.
2. Is this legal?
The herbicide is only approved for agricultural use and exposure to its residues in food.
The legality of direct, unprotected and cancer-causing exposure to its spraying on city sidewalks is controversial and falls into a gray area lacking proper government oversight.
3. Why is the spraying of sidewalks so harmful?
The cancer-causing herbicide is sprayed on every city sidewalk, in broad daylight and right next to parents, children, pregnant women, babies, pet dogs and street cats, who inhale it into their lungs, touch or ingest it and are at risk of terrible and unconscionable harm.
The herbicide remaines active and toxic for weeks after the spraying date, owing to its lack of absorption and slow disintegration rate on sidewalks compared to the agricultural soil for which it was intended.
4. Why are they spraying the sidewalks? And how come I've never heard about it?
The herbicide is sprayed across Ra'anana sidewalks due to complaints from residents regarding weed growth.
Currently the City Appearance Department of Ra'anana does not have an alternative solution that is not destructive to our health, other than periodic mechanical weeding within their budget constraints which doesn't eradicate them as thoroughly.
The municipality does not warn in advance about the schedules and locations of the sprayings and their associated health risks.
In conclusion:
The need to weed our sidewalks does not justify the hazardous exposure of us Ra'anana residents and our beloved families, pet dogs and street cats to toxic cancer-causing herbicides, and we demand that the spraying of these destructive compounds is terminated at once and for good!
